Mufindi Highland Lodge balances on the edge of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, at an altitude of 2 000m. Nestled in the Iringa region, deep within Tanzania’s Southern Highlands, the region is renowned for its tranquillity, temperate climate, and proximity to Ruaha National Park for fly-in safaris.

The Fox family was given five additional plots of land by the local communities living in Mufindi District to help protect the area and develop it for forestry. This is where the Foxes built their family home.

Mufindi Highland Lodge is surrounded by 2 000 acres of pristine wilderness, providing a haven for forest-dwelling wildlife. During a hike through the surrounding montane rainforests, as you keep a lookout for monkeys swinging in the treetops, you’ll learn about the Fox family’s efforts to protect these indigenous forests, particularly through the efforts of Chris Fox and his expert wildlife trackers who protect the flora and fauna during daily patrols. As part of their conservation efforts, they have removed over 20 000 wildlife snares, while working alongside relevant authorities to prevent environmental abuses. The protection of this region is important to the watersheds of the national parks and protected wildlife areas that lie south of Mufindi Highland Lodge, particularly the world-renowned Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve).

Since Foxes Safari Camps started their safari tours to Tanzania in 1982, the Fox family has planted more than 3.6 million trees on 9 000 acres of barren land that surrounded the family estate. These trees are a carbon dioxide sink that absorbs up to 60 million kilograms of carbon each year. This approach to environmental sustainability sees their entire safari operations absorb more carbon dioxide than it emits, making Safari Air Link a carbon-neutral airline.

Today, this is also the home base of the Foxes Community and Wildlife Conservation Trust, which mindfully supports the communities around Mufindi Highland Lodge through various education, child care, skills development, healthcare and sustainable development initiatives.
